The town, on the Mendip Hills has a long history, shown by the early churches, but really started to grow, and become a transport hub, with the development of the Somerset coalfield with several pits providing employment until their closure in the 1960s.(The last pits to close were at Haydon & Lower Writhlington in 1973 - both in Radstock!)

It has been the birth place or home to several notable people one of which was Arthur Waugh (1866 – 1943),he was an English author, literary critic, and publisher, he was also the father of the writers Alec and Evelyn Waugh.
